Position Overview
The Welfare Officer is responsible for ensuring high standards of donkey and mule welfare across project areas. The role provides technical leadership, ensures compliance with global and national welfare standards, and oversees the quality and impact of field-based animal welfare interventions.
Key Responsibilities
1. Technical Leadership on Equine Welfare
Provide expert guidance on animal welfare standards aligned with OIE and national guidelines.
Ensure consistent application of best practices in equine health and welfare.
2. Welfare Assessment & Quality Assurance
Oversee implementation of EARS-based welfare assessment tools.
Ensure accuracy, consistency, and quality of welfare data and reporting.
Validate welfare improvements and intervention outcomes.
3. Field Monitoring & Data Management
Lead field data collection on animal health and welfare conditions.
Manage caseload reporting systems for alumni-led interventions.
Ensure accurate documentation of welfare improvements.
4. Technical Support to Capacity Building
Support CPD training in clinical care, dentistry, farriery, and harnessing.
Provide technical input to training content and field application.
Strengthen technical capacity of alumni in welfare delivery.
5. Supervision of Field Interventions
Provide quality assurance for community-level welfare demonstrations.
Supervise alumni-led animal health and welfare interventions.
Ensure adherence to technical standards in field activities.
6. Learning & Improvement
Contribute to evidence generation on welfare impact.
Support continuous improvement of welfare approaches and tools.
Qualification
DVM or Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Medicine
3–5 years of experience in animal health, veterinary services, or animal welfare programs
Strong field experience working with rural communities
Experience in equine welfare is an added advantage
Strong technical knowledge of animal health and welfare
Practical field skills and problem-solving ability
Data collection and reporting skills
Good communication and training ability
