About the Role
We are seeking a skilled, detail-oriented, and quality-driven Laboratory Technologist to join our growing diagnostic team.
This role offers the opportunity to work in a modern, technology-enabled laboratory, delivering accurate and timely diagnostic services that support exceptional patient care. The successful candidate will perform a wide range of laboratory tests while maintaining the highest standards of quality, patient safety, and regulatory compliance.

Duties & Responsibilities
1. Specimen Management & Pre-analytical Processing
Receive, verify, and accept or reject specimens in accordance with pre-analytical acceptance criteria.
Confirm patient identity, test requests, and specimen labelling accuracy before processing.
Centrifuge, aliquot, and store specimens in appropriate conditions to maintain sample integrity.
Maintain specimen traceability from receipt through result release, ensuring full chain of custody.
Manage urgent samples with prioritization to minimize turnaround time.
2. Test Performance & Analytical Execution
Perform hematology tests including CBC, differential count, reticulocyte count, blood film morphology, and coagulation studies using automated and manual methods.
Execute biochemistry assays including liver function tests, renal function tests, electrolytes, lipid profiles, cardiac markers, glucose and HbA1c, hormones, thyroid function, and tumour markers.
Conduct immunology and serology using CLIA and rapid lateral flow methods.
Perform urinalysis, pregnancy testing, microalbumin, and 24-hour urine studies.
Carry out microbiological investigations including culture and sensitivity, Gram stain, acid-fast staining, and parasitology.
Process and prepare histopathology specimens including gross description, embedding, sectioning, H&E staining, and special stains as required.
Operate all laboratory analysers, microscopes, centrifuges, and ancillary equipment according to standard operating procedures.
3. Quality Control & Assurance
Perform daily, weekly, and monthly internal quality control (IQC) procedures using international rules and document all QC results.
Participate in external quality assessment schemes (EQA/PT) and resolve any outlier results through root cause analysis.
Verify calibration status, lot numbers, and expiry of reagents before each analytical run.
Identify, document, and escalate analytical errors, critical values, and instrument flags promptly.
Maintain complete and accurate records in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and ensure timely result authorization.
4. Equipment Operation & Maintenance
Perform daily start-up, shutdown, and preventive maintenance of all assigned analysers per manufacturer protocols.
Conduct and document function checks, linearity validation, and correlation studies.
Report equipment malfunctions, reagent shortages, and consumable needs to the laboratory supervisor in a timely manner.
Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free workstation and laboratory environment always.
5. Safety, Infection Control & Compliance
Follow universal precautions, biosafety Level 2 practices, and PPE requirements during all specimen handling.
Manage biohazardous waste according to institutional and regulatory disposal guidelines.
Adhere to chemical safety protocols for hazardous reagents including proper labelling, storage, and spill management.
Comply with all regulatory, accreditation, and institutional standards relevant to laboratory practice in Ethiopia.
6. Reporting, Communication & Continuous Improvement
Release verified patient results accurately and on time through the LIS; flag and communicate critical values to the requesting clinician immediately.
Prepare and submit workload statistics, QC summaries, TAT reports, and incident documentation as required.
Participate in competency assessments, proficiency testing, continuing education, and in-service training programmes.
Contribute to the development and review of standard operating procedures, work instructions, and quality documents.
Maintain professional registration, CPD requirements, and ethical standards as required by the International and relevant regulatory bodies.
N.B:
Additional duties may be assigned based on service needs, operational priorities, and organizational requirements.
Qualifications, Knowledge & Skills
Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Technology (B.Sc. MLT). Additional certification in a specialist area is an advantage.
Valid professional license to practice as a Laboratory Technologist in Ethiopia.
Minimum 3 years of post-qualification laboratory experience in a clinical or diagnostic setting. Experience in a multi-discipline laboratory is preferred.
Proficiency in hematology, clinical chemistry, serology, microbiology, and urinalysis.
High attention to detail, strong analytical thinking, ability to work under pressure, and commitment to accuracy, confidentiality, and patient safety.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Amharic.
