Position Summary
The General Manager – Gold Mining Operations is responsible for providing strategic leadership and overall management of the Company's gold mining operations, ensuring safe, efficient, environmentally responsible, and profitable production. The position oversees all aspects of exploration, geological evaluation, mine planning, extraction, mineral processing, logistics, finance, human resources, security, and stakeholder engagement.
The General Manager will lead multidisciplinary teams to achieve production targets, optimize operational performance, ensure regulatory compliance, and promote sustainable mining practices while maintaining the highest standards of health, safety, environmental stewardship, and corporate governance.
Major Duties & Responsibilities
1. Strategic Leadership
Provide strategic direction and overall leadership for the Company's gold mining operations.
Develop and implement short-, medium-, and long-term operational and business strategies.
Drive operational excellence and continuous improvement initiatives.
Ensure achievement of production, financial, and business performance targets.
Report operational performance and strategic initiatives to executive management.
2. Exploration and Geological Management
Oversee gold exploration programs, geological investigations, and resource evaluation activities.
Supervise geological mapping, drilling programs, sampling, grade control, and resource estimation.
Review geological reports and ensure accurate interpretation of geological data.
Collaborate with technical teams to optimize mine planning based on geological information.
Support reserve estimation and long-term mine development planning.
3. Mining Operations Management
Direct all mining operations, including mine development, extraction, hauling, processing, and maintenance.
Ensure efficient utilization of mining equipment, personnel, and resources.
Monitor operational performance against production plans and implement corrective actions where necessary.
Ensure optimum recovery of mineral resources while maintaining operational efficiency.
4. Processing Plant Management
Oversee gold processing activities to maximize recovery and production efficiency.
Monitor plant performance, production quality, and operational costs.
Ensure processing operations comply with technical specifications and environmental standards.
Coordinate maintenance programs to minimize operational downtime.
5. Financial and Commercial Management
Develop and manage annual operating and capital budgets.
Monitor project expenditures and implement cost-control measures.
Prepare financial forecasts and operational reports.
Evaluate business opportunities and recommend investment decisions.
Ensure efficient procurement and contract management practices.
6. Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality (HSEQ)
Promote a strong safety culture throughout the organization.
Ensure compliance with all applicable mining legislation, environmental regulations, and company policies.
Lead environmental protection and rehabilitation initiatives.
Conduct risk assessments and ensure effective mitigation measures are implemented.
Maintain compliance with occupational health and safety standards.
7. Security and Asset Protection
Develop and implement security strategies for personnel, equipment, facilities, and gold production.
Ensure secure handling, storage, transportation, and accountability of gold and other valuable assets.
Coordinate with security teams to prevent theft, fraud, and unauthorized activities.
8. Stakeholder and Government Relations
Build and maintain effective relationships with government authorities, regulatory agencies, local communities, and business partners.
Represent the Company during negotiations, inspections, and official meetings.
Ensure compliance with licensing requirements and statutory reporting obligations.
Promote positive community engagement and corporate social responsibility initiatives.
9. Human Resource Management
Lead and develop multidisciplinary operational teams.
Oversee workforce planning, recruitment, succession planning, and employee development.
Implement performance management systems and leadership development programs.
Foster a culture of accountability, professionalism, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
10. Risk Management and Corporate Governance
Identify strategic and operational risks affecting mining activities.
Develop and implement risk mitigation and business continuity plans.
Ensure compliance with Company policies, contractual obligations, and applicable mining laws.
Maintain sound corporate governance and ethical business practices.
11. Reporting
Prepare and submit weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual operational reports.
Present production, financial, geological, safety, and environmental performance reports to executive management.
Monitor Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and implement corrective actions where required.
Maintain accurate operational and technical documentation.
Education
Bachelor's degree in Geology, Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or a related discipline.
A Master's degree in Geology, Mining Engineering, Business Administration (MBA), Project Management, or a related field is highly desirable.
Professional certifications in Mining Management, Project Management, or Business Leadership are an added advantage.
Experience
Minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in the mining industry.
At least 7 years of experience in a senior leadership position such as General Manager, Mine Manager, Operations Manager, or Mining Project Director.
Mandatory experience in gold exploration, geological evaluation, mineral resource estimation, and gold mining operations.
Experience managing multidisciplinary teams in remote or challenging operational environments.
