Introduction:
The Brooke hospital for animals (Brooke) is a UK based international animal welfare charity with over 90 years’ experience dedicated to improving the lives of working horses, donkeys and mules with a vision of creating a world where working animals are free from suffering. Brooke’s agendas are directly linked to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal of supporting strong and resilient livelihoods of communities who depend on working equines.
The Brooke has been working in Ethiopia since 2006 with a country office in Addis Ababa. Currently Brooke runs its animal welfare health improvement programmes in three regions of Ethiopia.
Since April 2022, Brooke focused on strengthening the existing animal health systems by supporting the development of competent, confident, and compassionate animal health practitioners (as defined by Brooke animal health mentoring framework) by closely working with VTI and this job is related to ensuring this and wider objectives that promotes Brooke values with VTI

None at Present. The post holder must work in close collaboration with the university focal persons, clinical year students, and local animal health service providers. Also take advice from the programme performance and capacity development team.
Duty stations:
Samara and Arsi Universities with frequent travel to outreach areas where the VTI is working with and nationally
Number of Position: Two
Duration: One year contract with possible extension
Salary: Organizational scale
Main Purpose of the Job:
Ensure the mainstreaming of the Animal health mentoring framework (AHMF) within the University teachings,
Establishment, proper use and sustainability of the clinical skills lab (CSL),
Integration of the CSL with the AWHT centre.
Training and mentoring of animal health providers (AHPs)
Main tasks and responsibilities
Mainstreaming the AHMF in VTI
Work closely with the university faculty staff, clinical year students and the Brooke management to ensure that AHMF is used to mentor and assess clinical year students
Training of clinical year students in equine medicine and AHMF application
Train teachers and students on good animal welfare practices, compassionate handling
Together the focal person, conduct AHMF training for university instructors and students. Lobby university academic administration bodies in mainstreaming AHMF in the university teaching-learning practice, enable the utilization AHMF tool as part of measuring student competency.
Ensure availability and utilization of essential drugs in the university
Undertake initial AHMF baseline for clinical year students and follow-up on quarterly basis
Integrate CSL training with AHMF in the AWHT centres
Establishment of CSL in VTI
Work closely university academic staffs and focal person in establishing and strengthening of CSL. Mainstream CSL in the course curriculum as part of standalone or integrated approach for teaching and learning
Coordinate the university CSL innovation activities (ensure innovation, adoption of best and appropriate clinical skill model with local resources)
Support welfare friendly teaching-learning practices in place through utilization of clinical skill models
Help the establishment of actively moving and innovative animal welfare club from all willing and innovative vet students
Meet regularly with the animal welfare clubs to promote innovativeness and replacement of models in sustainable way
Ensure that the protocols set for the use of the CSL by students is being adhered
Ensure that the Brooke animal health and welfare policies and approaches are promoted and adhered to in the university and operational area (euthanasia policy, working with animals, CH etc...)
Lead clinical year students outreach programmes
In close collaboration with the university staff, facilitate welfare friendly community services/outreach programs by clinical year students.
Work with other urban and rural local service providers and communities to ensure that services are welfare friendly and acceptable/ adaptable by owners and users.
Ensure that students apply their AHMF skills during all outreach programmes and use essential medicines
Promote standardisation exercise and feed backing between clinical year students and mentors
Mentor and support the VTI focal persons
Train and support the VTI focal persons to deliver their roles related to the joint agreement with the VTI and the Brooke.
Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting:
Participate in the assessment of EWOB and other animal based indicators (ABI) and KAP of owners and users to inform local and need based programing
Participate in planning meetings to triangulate EWOB findings.
Quarterly report AHMF findings of the clinical year students and other mentored AHPs in precise and quality way
Compile stories of change from learnings at least once in a quarter
Maintain and update records of equines, equine owners and local service providers within the operational areas.
Coordinate and support Research works as appropriate (in collaboration with other academic staffs and/or focal person)
Ensure that best practices in the Program area with regard are documented and shared with relevant stakeholders (in collaboration with the university focal person).
Ensure that key lessons from the programme are captured (preparation of case and success stories), documented, and used for programme development
General
Undertake any other repentant tasks assigned by the line manager in ways in which it will not harm the objectives of the stated job mandates
Participate in training s and other capacity development programmes that support your roles
Mandatory safeguarding training and adhere to it
Mandatory pre-training agreement to be signed by students and instructors

A minimum of 5 years field based experience in providing mentoring using the AHMF tool and delivering training AHPs using the AHMF tool
ü
Demonstrated experience in using models for training and mentoring AHPs
ü
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, able to write reports in English
ü
Worked as Brooke focal point within a training institution/s
ü
Good report writing skills.
ü
Knowledge of basic Animal Welfare (AW) concepts and the importance of working equines to households / the economy.
ü
Good IT skills, MS Office applications
ü
Driving licence (motor Bick)
ü
Experience in model making for CSL teaching
ü
Skills and Abilities

Good analytical and critical thinking skills.

Basic in English and fluency (spoken and written) in Amharic; speaking local language is advantageous.
