The ICU Nurse will provide highly specialized, continuous, and compassionate nursing care to critically ill patients requiring intensive monitoring, life-support interventions, and complex medical management. The role involves advanced clinical assessment, rapid decision-making, operation of critical care equipment, and close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes in life-threatening conditions. The nurse also plays a key role in supporting families during critical illness and end-of-life care situations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clinical Duties:
Provide direct, continuous nursing care to critically ill patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Monitor and interpret vital signs, hemodynamic parameters, and neurological status using advanced monitoring systems.
Administer medications, titrate infusions, and manage intravenous lines, arterial lines, central venous lines, and other invasive devices.
Operate and manage life-support equipment including mechanical ventilators, cardiac monitors, infusion pumps, and oxygen delivery systems.
Conduct comprehensive and frequent patient assessments to detect early signs of deterioration, complications, or organ failure.
Respond promptly to medical emergencies and participate in advanced life support (ALS) and resuscitation procedures.
Collaborate with intensivists and physicians in implementing and adjusting individualized critical care plans.
Provide specialized nursing care including pain management, wound care, pressure injury prevention, and infection control.
Support end-of-life care and palliative interventions when required, ensuring dignity and comfort.
Educate and support patients’ families regarding patient condition, treatment progress, and prognosis in a compassionate manner.
Administrative Duties:
Maintain accurate, complete, and timely ICU nursing documentation and electronic medical records.
Ensure strict adherence to ICU protocols, clinical guidelines, and infection prevention and control standards.
Collaborate effectively with intensivists, physicians, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals.
Monitor availability, functionality, and proper use of ICU equipment and critical care supplies.
Participate in patient safety initiatives, morbidity and mortality reviews, and quality improvement programs.
Ensure safe handling, storage, and administration of high-risk medications in ICU settings.
Educational Duties:
Provide ongoing education and emotional support to patients’ families regarding critical illness, treatment processes, and recovery expectations.
Participate in continuous professional development, ICU training sessions, and competency evaluations.
Stay updated with evidence-based practices, advancements in critical care nursing, and new ICU technologies.
Contribute to mentoring and supervision of junior nurses and nursing students assigned to the ICU.
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Nursing.
Valid professional license by the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA) or equivalent regulatory body in Ethiopia
Minimum of 3 years of demonstrable experience in in critical care nursing, preferably in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) setting.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
:
Strong critical thinking, clinical judgment, and ability to perform under pressure in high-acuity environments.
Excellent attention to detail with strong organizational and prioritization skills.
Compassionate communication skills, especially when supporting critically ill patients and their families.
Strong knowledge of critical care nursing principles, mechanical ventilation, hemodynamic monitoring, and life-support systems.
Ability to recognize and respond rapidly to clinical deterioration and medical emergencies.
Strong teamwork and interdisciplinary collaboration skills in a fast-paced ICU environment.
