The Circulating Nurse will provide highly specialized and compassionate nursing care to patients undergoing surgical procedures. This role involves coordinating perioperative nursing activities, ensuring patient safety, maintaining operating room efficiency, facilitating communication among the surgical team, and supporting quality care throughout the surgical process.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clinical Duties:
Provide direct perioperative nursing care to patients before, during, and after surgical procedures.
Perform preoperative patient assessments and verify patient identity, consent forms, surgical site, and procedure details.
Prepare the operating room by ensuring all necessary equipment, instruments, and supplies are available and functioning properly.
Assist with patient positioning, skin preparation, and implementation of patient safety measures.
Maintain a safe and sterile surgical environment and monitor compliance with aseptic techniques.
Coordinate activities within the operating room and serve as the primary communication link among surgeons, anesthetists, scrub nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
Obtain and provide additional instruments, supplies, medications, and equipment as required during surgical procedures.
Monitor patient status throughout surgery and promptly report concerns to the surgical team.
Ensure accurate surgical counts of instruments, sponges, needles, and other supplies in collaboration with the scrub nurse.
Facilitate safe collection, labeling, documentation, and transportation of surgical specimens.
Administrative Duties:
Maintain accurate, detailed, and timely perioperative records and surgical documentation.
Collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthetists, scrub nurses, and other members of the surgical team.
Adhere to strict infection prevention and control protocols and operating room standards.
Ensure proper utilization, maintenance, and availability of surgical equipment and supplies.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives, patient safety programs, and operating room audits.
Educational Duties:
Provide education and emotional support to patients and families regarding perioperative care and surgical procedures as appropriate.
Participate in clinical training, continuing professional development, and competency assessments.
Stay updated with the latest advancements in perioperative nursing, patient safety practices, and operating room management.
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Nursing.
Valid professional license by the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA) or equivalent regulatory body in Ethiopia
Minimum of 3 years of demonstrable experience in perioperative nursing, preferably in an Operating Room setting.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
:
Strong knowledge of surgical procedures, operating room protocols, patient safety standards, and infection prevention practices.
Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, communication abilities, and capacity to work effectively under pressure.
Excellent teamwork and coordination skills for effective collaboration with multidisciplinary surgical teams.
Knowledge of perioperative nursing principles, sterile techniques, surgical documentation, and operating room workflow management.
