Position Summary
The Business Development Officer (BDO) is responsible for identifying new business opportunities, strengthening client relationships, expanding the organization's market presence, and contributing to sustainable business growth. The BDO supports the development of strategic partnerships, proposal preparation, market intelligence gathering, and client engagement activities to achieve organizational objectives.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
Business Development and Opportunity Identification
Identify and pursue new business opportunities, partnerships, and potential clients.
Monitor tender announcements, Requests for Proposals (RFPs), Expressions of Interest (EOIs), and consultancy opportunities from government agencies, NGOs, UN agencies, donors, and private sector organizations.
Conduct market research and competitor analysis to identify emerging trends and opportunities.
Develop and maintain a pipeline of potential projects and business opportunities.
Client Relationship Management
Build and maintain strong relationships with existing and prospective clients.
Serve as a focal point for client inquiries and business development communications.
Conduct regular follow-ups with clients to understand their needs and expectations.
Represent the organization in meetings, workshops, conferences, and networking events.
Proposal and Bid Development
Coordinate the preparation and submission of high-quality technical and financial proposals.
Support the collection and organization of required documents for bids and tenders.
Collaborate with technical teams to develop competitive and compliant proposals.
Ensure timely submission of proposals and adherence to donor and client requirements.
Strategic Partnerships and Networking
Establish and strengthen partnerships with consulting firms, NGOs, academic institutions, and other stakeholders.
Identify opportunities for consortium building and strategic collaborations.
Maintain an updated database of partners, consultants, and key stakeholders.
Marketing and Organizational Visibility
Contribute to the development and implementation of marketing and communication strategies.
Prepare company profiles, capability statements, brochures, and promotional materials.
Manage and update the company's website, social media platforms, and business directories.
Promote the organization's services and achievements to potential clients and partners.
Contract and Business Tracking
Support contract negotiations and agreement finalization processes.
Maintain records of business development activities, submitted proposals, and awarded contracts.
Track proposal success rates and business performance indicators.
Prepare periodic business development reports for management.
Knowledge Management and Reporting
Maintain an up-to-date database of clients, opportunities, and business contacts.
Document lessons learned from proposal development and contract implementation.
Prepare weekly, monthly, and quarterly business development reports.
Provide management with strategic recommendations based on market intelligence and business trends.
Education
Master’s Degree (MSc/MA) in
International Relations
,
Development Studies
,
Economics
, or other related fields from a recognized university.
Additional training in business development, proposal writing, marketing, partnership management, or resource mobilization is an advantage.
Experience
Minimum of
4 years of relevant professional experience
in business development, partnership building, proposal development, marketing, fundraising, or related areas.
Demonstrated experience in identifying and pursuing business opportunities with government institutions, NGOs, UN agencies, donors, and private sector organizations.
Proven experience in coordinating and preparing technical and financial proposals, bids, and tenders.
Experience in market research, stakeholder engagement, and strategic partnership development.
Experience working in consulting firms, development organizations, research institutions, or international NGOs is highly desirable.
