About the African Union
The African Union (AU) is a Pan‑African continental body promoting unity, solidarity, and sustainable development across Africa. Headquartered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the AU spearheads Africa’s integration and represents a dynamic force in the global arena.
The AU Internship Program provides young professionals and students with the opportunity to gain hands‑on experience in various AU departments, complementing their academic studies and preparing them for future leadership roles.
Purpose of the Internship
The program aims to:
Expose participants to the workings of the AU at an early stage of their career. Strengthen personal and professional skills in an intercultural environment. Provide administrative and technical support to AU programmes, projects, and activities. Serve as a grooming ground for future African leaders.
Focus Areas
Interns may be assigned to one of the following AU departments/directorates:
Cabinet of the Chairperson / Deputy Chairperson Economic Development, Trade, Industry & Mining (ETIM) Education, Science, Technology & Innovation (ESTI) Political Affairs, Peace & Security (PAPS) Health, Humanitarian Affairs & Social Development (HHS) Human Resources Management (HRM) Infrastructure & Energy (IE) Women, Gender & Youth (WGY) Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) Protocol, Partnerships & Resource Mobilization Information & Communication, ERP, MIS, and more.
Eligibility Requirements
Actively enrolled in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree OR hold a Bachelor’s/Master’s degree. Nationals of AU Member States. Fluent in at least one AU working language (Arabic, English, French, Portuguese). Maximum age: 32 years at the time of selection. Strong moral conduct and integrity. No prior work experience required.
Terms & Conditions
Duration: 3 months, renewable once. Interns are unpaid ; travel, accommodation, and living expenses are self‑funded. AU assists with visa and residence permits. Interns must have personal insurance coverage.
Required Skills
Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work in a multicultural environment. Fluency in one AU language; knowledge of another is an asset.
