Job Summary
The Poultry Production Assistant is responsible for supporting the day-to-day management of poultry production operations. The position ensures proper feeding, sanitation, animal welfare, disease prevention, egg collection, and overall husbandry practices to maintain healthy birds and achieve optimal production performance. The employee is expected to minimize mortality, prevent losses, and maintain a clean and safe production environment.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
1. Feeding Management
Prepare poultry feed according to established feeding schedules and standards.
Provide feed and clean drinking water to birds on time and in the required quantities.
Monitor feed consumption and report abnormalities.
Ensure proper storage and handling of feed to prevent spoilage and contamination.
2. Cleaning and Sanitation
Clean poultry houses, equipment, feeders, drinkers, and surrounding areas regularly.
Maintain high standards of hygiene and biosecurity.
Dispose of poultry waste properly in accordance with farm procedures.
Assist in routine disinfection and sanitation activities.
3. Disease Prevention and Animal Welfare
Monitor bird health and behavior daily.
Identify signs of disease, stress, injury, or abnormal conditions and report immediately.
Implement farm biosecurity measures to reduce disease risks.
Support vaccination, medication, and health management programs as directed.
4. Mortality and Loss Prevention
Take all necessary precautions to prevent bird mortality and production losses.
Protect birds from predators, theft, environmental stress, and other foreseeable risks.
Ensure poultry houses are properly secured and maintained.
Report any incidents that may affect flock health or productivity.
5. Poultry Husbandry Management
Segregate sick, injured, weak, or stressed birds from healthy flocks as required.
Provide appropriate care and monitoring for isolated birds.
Maintain proper stocking density and welfare standards.
Support routine husbandry operations and flock management activities.
6. Egg Collection and Handling
Collect eggs carefully and regularly without causing damage or loss.
Sort, clean, count, and store eggs according to farm standards.
Prepare eggs for marketing and transportation.
Maintain accurate daily egg production records.
7. Record Keeping
Maintain records related to feeding, mortality, egg production, health observations, and sanitation activities.
Submit reports to supervisors as required.
8. Compliance and Safety
Follow all farm rules, safety procedures, and biosecurity protocols.
Use farm equipment responsibly and report maintenance needs.
Support continuous improvement initiatives within the poultry unit.
Qualifications and Requirements
Educational Background
Minimum completion of
Grade 6
education.
Additional training in poultry production, animal husbandry, agriculture, or related fields is an advantage.
Experience
Minimum of
2 years of practical experience in poultry husbandry and poultry production operations
.
Required Skills and Competencies
Good understanding of poultry feeding and husbandry practices.
Ability to identify sick or stressed birds.
Knowledge of poultry house sanitation and biosecurity measures.
Ability to handle poultry and eggs carefully.
Strong sense of responsibility, honesty, and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Willingness to work on a farm environment and follow scheduled routines.
Working Conditions
Primarily based at the poultry farm.
May require work during weekends, holidays, or extended hours when necessary.
Exposure to poultry houses, farm equipment, and outdoor working conditions.
