Job Summary

The WASH Officer will be responsible for implementing Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene activities under the Safe Learning Project. The role focuses on improving access to safe water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene practices in schools and surrounding communities while ensuring child-friendly, inclusive, and sustainable solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the implementation of WASH activities according to project plans, donor requirements, and national standards.
  • Coordinate WASH infrastructure construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance activities.
  • Promote hygiene awareness programs on handwashing, sanitation, menstrual hygiene, and disease prevention.
  • Work with schools, government offices, communities, and partners to strengthen WASH services.
  • Monitor project progress, collect data, prepare reports, and document lessons learned.
  • Ensure compliance with child safeguarding, protection, and organizational policies.
  • Identify risks and support quality implementation of WASH activities.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in:
    • Civil Engineering
    • Hydraulic/Water Supply Engineering
    • Environmental Health
    • Environmental Engineering
    • Public Health
    • Sanitary Engineering
    • Related fields
  • Master’s Degree is an added advantage.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in WASH programs, preferably in humanitarian, development, or education settings.
  • Experience working with NGOs, UN agencies, or humanitarian organizations is highly desirable.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Good problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Knowledge of school WASH programs and hygiene promotion.
  • Understanding of humanitarian standards and WASH guidelines.
  • Fluency in English and Amharic; local language knowledge is an advantage.
  • Cultural sensitivity and understanding of community needs.
