Position: Primary School Librarian
Qualifications
· Diploma/BSc in library and information science.
Experience
· Minimum of two years’ experience in a school Library is mandatory.
Reporting Structure:
a) The Primary School librarian reports directly to the Head of Primary School for all issues related to the Primary School programme.
b) The Primary School librarian reports to the Senior Librarian (LRC) for all issues related to library policies and procedure.
Duties
· To liaise with class Teachers to arrange times when the library will be available for class use.
· Organize, catalog, classify and maintain library resources, including books, digital materials,
· To ensure that the collection is kept in a neat and orderly manner to enable students to find books and resources quickly.
· Manage library circulation systems, including borrowing, returns, and inventory control.
· To instruct students in the correct use of the library and how to find books and resources in it.
· To encourage a love of books and to encourage students to use the library as an important source of learning.
· To liaise with class Teachers and subject Teachers to receive recommendations for additional purchases.
· To make recommendations to the Literacy Coordinator for additional purchases of books and materials for the library.
· Select and recommend new library materials appropriate for primary-aged students.
· To keep an ongoing record of books that are loaned to students and staff and to check that they are returned on time. Any overdue books or lost books should be followed up and charges made to parents if books are lost.
· To arrange displays, including student work, which will make the library and attractive and appealing
Documentation and Reporting
· Prepare full book list, checklists, material usage records, and issue reports.
· Update the book orders on time and with full clarity.
· Prepare library reports and maintain accurate records, by relating to inventory.
· Monitor library budgets and purchasing.
· Report recurrent challenges and propose improvements.
Skills and Competencies
· Ability to work with children
· Manage library management database system and digital learning resources.
· Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills.
· Ability to prioritize tasks and respond to requests under tight timelines.
· strong communication skills.
· Ability to work independently or within a team-based environment.
· Knowledge of library management systems is an asset.
· High level of integrity, discipline, and work ethics.
Work Conditions
· Involves physical activity such as managing kids, moving and carrying books and working in tight spaces.
· Exposure to ICT and data equipment; safety protocols.
Performance Indicators
· On-time completion of kid’s classes and assigned periods.
· Response time to work orders and service requests.
· Sensitive to Library resources and their safety.
· Accuracy of documentation of the library documents and books.
· Compliance with safeguarding principles.
