JOB SUMMARY
The Pharmacist will assist medical staff by ensuring the proper dispensing of medications through the verification of prescriptions, appropriate storage and distribution of medical supplies, and provision of health advice within the scope of their professional role in support of Samaritan’s Purse program. The Pharmacist will be responsible for maintaining a high standard of care as the health team treat patients.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide pharmaceutical care services and technical supervision in accordance with SP and Ethiopian Government protocols, WHO standards, and good pharmaceutical practices.
- Work closely with clinical staff to ensure safe, rational, and effective use of medicines to improve patient health outcomes.
- Manage pharmacy operations at the program location, ensuring availability, proper organization, and continuous supply of essential medicines and medical commodities.
- Manage pharmaceutical and medical supply inventory, ensuring accurate stock control, recording, and reconciliation.
- Maintain and update supply trackers, including daily consumption, stock levels, and forecasting for timely re-ordering.
- Prepare and manage portable pharmaceutical kits and supply bins for field and outreach activities.
- Ensure proper storage of medicines and medical supplies in compliance with SP protocols, including temperature monitoring, humidity control, and appropriate storage conditions.
- Maintain cold chain integrity where applicable and ensure proper handling of temperature-sensitive medicines.
- Ensure pharmaceutical commodities security at all times, including controlled access and proper locking procedures when not supervised.
- Safeguard pharmaceutical commodities against loss, theft, damage, or misuse through strict inventory and accountability systems.
- Support implementation of anti-fraud and loss prevention measures within pharmacy operations.
- Support clinical leadership in enforcing compliance with infection prevention and control (IPC) standards in all pharmaceutical handling activities.
- Ensure quality assurance of medicines and medical supplies, including identification and removal of expired, damaged, or substandard products.
- Report stock status, shortages, expiries, and any pharmaceutical-related issues in a timely manner.
- Ensure patient confidentiality is maintained in all pharmaceutical and clinical interactions.
- Promote safe medication use and patient counseling in coordination with clinical staff where applicable.
- Work collaboratively with all staff to ensure culturally sensitive care and effective service delivery.
- Maintain professional conduct in line with SP values, humanitarian principles, and pharmaceutical ethics.
- Carry out additional tasks and responsibilities with a generous and serving spirit for the benefit of Samaritan’s Purse.
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE NEEDED
- Diploma/BSc Degree in Pharmacy.
- 4 - 5 years’ experience in pharmacy or hospital setting, preferably in low-resource setting.
- NGO experience preferred
- Proficiency in English and Amharic
- Knowledge of the regional language required
- Knowledge of any other national language is a plus

- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be exposed to loud noises around the maintenance and construction workshops.
